How can you ensure maintaining your integrity as a leader?

When it comes to leadership, integrity is everything.

C.S Lewis described it as:

Doing the Right Thing Even When No One Is Watching. C.S Lewis

I already mentioned it on my previous article Become a transformational Leader? Ok What it takes? True Leaders are honest and transparent in their dealings with others. So how can you ensure maintaining your integrity as a leader? Here are a six principles to protect integrity:

1. Be authentic

The first step to maintaining your integrity is being honest with yourself. Take a look at your own motivations and intentions. Are you always looking out for the best interests of your team or organization? Or do you sometimes let personal gain get in the way? If you’re not honest with yourself, it will be challenging to maintain your integrity in other areas of your life. Don’t try to be someone you’re not.

2. Be transparent

Leaders with strong integrity communicate openly and honestly with those around them. They are transparent about their thoughts and feelings and ensure everyone is on the same page. This open communication creates trust and respect between the leader and their team.

3. Be consistent

A leader with integrity is consistent in their words and actions. They walk their talk and lead by example. When you’re consistent in your behaviour, people know what to expect and can trust that you will always do what you say you will do.

4. Be accountable

Take responsibility for your actions and decisions. Don’t make excuses or dodge responsibility. Admit when you’re wrong.

5. Be respectful

Treat others with dignity and respect, even when disagreeing.

6. Be principled

Stand up for what you believe in, even when it’s unpopular or inconvenient. Additionally, it is important to surround yourself with people who will support you in maintaining your integrity.

Conclusion

There are many ways to ensure that you maintain your integrity as a leader. Every leader faces different challenges and ethical dilemmas, so there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. However, these basic principles that all leaders can follow to help them make the right decisions and stay true to their values.

By being honest and transparent, setting a good example, and encouraging others to do the same, you can create a culture of integrity within your organization that will help you overcome any challenges you may face.
